Eyelid and Eye Reshaping

EYELID and EYE RESHAPING

Eyes are the first thing people notice about each other, and first impressions matter. Droopy, wrinkled, baggy, and saggy eyelids suggest advanced age, fatigue, and infirmity, even when a person is feeling rested and alert. Smooth, tight, open eyelids convey interest, bright vitality, and intelligent energy.

Yet, beyond blepharoplasty, eyelid cleanup, and droopy eyelid repair, other procedures can reshape the eye, alter ethnicity, change resting facial expression, improve unwanted familial tendencies, and increase a sense of good health and well-being.

WHAT IS EYELID and EYE RESHAPING?

Blepharoplasty surgery can clean up the upper and lower eyelids, erase years of wear and tear.  Ptosis repair can open the eyes, providing a more awake, engaged, and alert expression.  But if you want to change the overall appearance of your eyes, then maybe you are thinking about resphaping.

Reshaping borrows advanced techniques used in reconstruction and often involves changing the relationship between the eyes, eyelids, and face.  Many of these procedures can be accomplished in the office under local anesthetic, and wonderfully, many may be covered by insurance.

Although every person and every procedure is customized, the over-riding goal during reshaping is always to make the change appear totally natural without tell-tale signs and obvious incisions.  Just because you were born with it, doesn’t mean you have to live with it, and small anatomic changes can have surprisingly large aesthetic impacts.

What Can Eyelid And Eye Reshaping Accomplish?

  • Fill in deep hollows above the eyes
  • Alter deep-set or bulging eyes
  • Lengthen or shorten the width of the eyes
  • Widen or shorten the distance between the eyes
  • Fashion an up-slant or down-slant to the eyes
  • Correct deep cheek hollows beneath the eyes
  • Create an upper eyelid fold where there’s never been one
  • Soften big rolls beneath the eyes that appear suddenly when smiling

EYE and EYELID RESHAPING TECHNIQUES

The techniques used depend upon each person’s specific anatomy and goals. Many techniques are available and used. Some of the more common are listed below

Orbital Surgery

Orbital surgery acts on the space BEHIND the eyes to move an eye forward, backward, up, down, or sideways. These procedures can fill in spaces above and below the eyes, or make eyelids appear thicker or thinner.

Changing the Corners

Moving the corners of the eyes along with other procedures can change resting facial expression, communicating whimsical, wistful, playful, serious, thoughtful, intense, or sultry messages

Asian and Western Eyelids

The shape and height of the upper eyelid fold along with other eyelid changes is a powerful tool to make an eyelid appear more or less Asian. Maintaining natural ethnicity is an art, but eyes can also be made to appear rounder and more open or intriguingly angled.

Framing the Eyes

Sometimes “the frame makes the picture.” Thinning heavy brow bones can make the eyes “pop,’ while filling under eye spaces and hollow cheeks can gently soften the eyes and even the perception of the whole face.

PROCEDURES COMMONLY COMBINED WITH EYELID AND EYE RESHAPING

Reimagining the eyes often works best with other complimentary procedures:

Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty

Cleaning up bags and sags in the upper and lower eyelids can sharpen the focus on subtle reshaping changes.

Wrinkle Relaxers

The neuromodulators Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, Xeomin, and Myobloc can all help to smooth new dynamic transition lines.

Dermal Fillers

Injectable HA products from the Restylane, Juvéderm, and RHA families can offer powerful additions to reshaping techniques, smoothing and recontouring around the eyes

Acellular Dermis Grafts

ADGs or acellular dermis grafts are highly versatile and can be used to provide structural support, increased volume, or cross medium smooth transitions.

HOW MUCH DOES EYELID or EYE RESHAPING COST?

Costs vary widely, depending upon which procedures are chosen. Some procedures can be performed in an office setting under local anesthesia without expensive facility and anesthesia fees, while others may be covered by insurance, depending upon simultaneous eye health benefits.

Recovery & Results

Most people are surprised by how manageable reshaping recovery can be. Eyelid procedures usually have swelling, bruising, and strenuous exercise restrictions for a week or two and last decades. Framing and orbital procedures take a little longer to settle and heal and can last a lifetime.

Candidates for Eyelid or Eye Reshaping

You might be a good candidate for eye or eyelid reshaping if you wish to:

  • Change your ethnic appearance, develop a more Western or Asian look
  • Raise or lower an upper eyelid fold
  • Create an upper or lower eyelid fold where there hasn’t been one
  • Widen or shorten the length of the eyes or the distance between them
  • Fashion an up-slant or down-slant to the eyes, altering resting facial expression
  • Fill-in deep hollows above or below the eyes
  • Minimize large rolls that develop beneath the eyes when smiling
  • Alter bulging or sunken eyes
  • Build up combined sunken cheek and under eye hollows
  • Reduce heavy, ponderous brow bones
  • Create three-dimensional depth to a flat midface

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Eye or Eyelid Reshaping Be Obvious and Look “Odd?”
Reshaping procedures can be very subtle or more extreme, depending upon a person’s goals. We have a very good understanding of what others will immediately notice, and what will simply provide subtle messages. All surgery, regardless of the degree of change, should appear natural and invisible, seen only in its harmony, not our handiwork.
Is Eye and Eyelid Reshaping Reversible?
Most procedures are partly or fully reversible, but some are not. During consultations, the possibility for alteration or complete reversal are discussed as part of the overall planning.
Why Would Insurance Cover Reshaping Procedures, and How Can I Know if it Will?
Some reshaping procedures provide better eye protection, expand the visual field, and increase eye wetting. These medically important improvements are often covered. During consultations, we review which procedures are likely to be covered and then submit to insurance for a “predetermination” before surgery, so that there are no surprise expenses.
Are the Reshaping Procedures as Extreme as They Seem?
Some of the orbit and framing procedures sound much more involved and frightening than they are. We do them frequently and have tremendous experience, but these procedures are not for everyone. They are for people who want much more change than the average individual. In general, the bigger the change desired, the greater the intervention required, but we work hard to design ways to maximize alterations using minimal interventions.
Why Haven’t I Heard of Eyelid or Eye Reshaping Before?
Most people feel comfortable in their own skin and simply want a subtle clean-up or refresh to keep their appearance healthy and vibrant. Others, however, may be seeking more significant changes – whether due to congenital conditions, ethnic concerns, illness, trauma, cancer, or the natural effects of time. For these individuals, we draw on our broad multidisciplinary training and extensive reconstructive experience to provide a wider range of options.
