What is Botox?

Botulinum proteins are FDA-approved cosmetic injectables that work by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles, such as crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead creases. These treatments are quick, minimally invasive, and effective, making them one of the most popular cosmetic procedures worldwide. These proteins not only improve your appearance but can also address medical concerns like certain types of chronic migraines and excessive sweating.

Botox is a brand name and the first of a series of such injectable proteins. Like Xerox, the brand name Botox is frequently used when referring to any of the botulinum proteins; however, each protein actually has distinct characteristics. Learn more about our comprehensive cosmetic procedures.

What Can Botox Accomplish?

Botulinum proteins are highly versatile treatments for cosmetic and medical concerns.
Cosmetic Uses

  • Forehead Lines: Smooth horizontal wrinkles across the forehead
  • Frown Lines: Minimize the “11s” between the eyebrows
  • Crow’s Feet: Reduce wrinkles around the outer corners of the eyes
  • Bunny Lines: Smooth fine lines on the nose bridge
  • Lip Flip: Subtly enhance the upper lip for a fuller appearance
  • Nose Tip: Relax and raise droopy nose tips

Medical Uses

  • Chronic Migraines: Reduce the frequency and severity of certain types of migraines
  • Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis): Control overactive sweat glands in areas like the underarms
  • Jaw Tension and Bruxism: Relax overactive jaw muscles that can not only be painful, but also grind and destroy your teeth
  • Spasms and Twitches: Relieve embarrassing and functionally disturbing contractions in the face

Botulinum Toxin Techniques

Our physicians utilize advanced injection strategies developed through extensive clinical research and experience.

Precision Injection Mapping

Each treatment is customized based on your unique facial anatomy and muscle patterns. Our physicians map injection sites to ensure optimal results while maintaining natural facial expressions.

Multi-Protein Approach

We may combine different botulinum proteins like Dysport and Botox to achieve the best effect at the lowest cost, taking advantage of each protein’s unique characteristics.

Dilution Optimization

Our technique varies protein concentration based on the treatment area—highly concentrated for pinpoint accuracy or diluted for broader effect distribution as needed.

Medical Integration

For patients with medical conditions like migraines or hyperhidrosis, we integrate therapeutic protocols with cosmetic enhancement for comprehensive care.
dysport

Dysport: Advanced Alternative to Botox

We are pleased to offer Dysport as a newly FDA-approved alternative to Botox now widely available in the United States. However, Dysport is not new to our practice. Over half a decade ago, we performed one of the largest clinical studies on this medication in the U.S. and discovered the injection strategies now used across the globe to maximize the duration and effect of treatments.

Are Botox and Dysport the same? Both are botulinum toxin Type A purified from bacterium with an identical mechanism of action, and contrary to many advertisements and claims, our experience is they last about the same amount of time.

How Do Botox and Dysport Differ?

  • Cost: Competition is driving the cost of both toxins down through competitive promotional offers. Ask us about current, manufacturer-driven charges.
  • Dose: Different people handle the two toxins differently, and a conversion between the two is not always simple. For most, we don’t recommend frequent switching back and forth between the two, because for us to develop an understanding of how your body handles the toxins and to maximize your effectiveness, we need consistent data.
  • Onset: Dysport appears to have a slightly earlier time of onset.
  • Spread of Effect: Dysport’s effect spreads out more from the area of injection, similar to what happens when you dilute Botox. For some, this is good, but for others, this is bad. If you need pinpoint accuracy, then you probably want highly concentrated Botox. In some patients, we use a combination of Botox and Dysport to give them the best effect at the lowest cost.

Procedures Commonly Combined with Botulinum Toxin

Many patients choose to combine Botox with complementary treatments for enhanced results.

Dermal Fillers

Combine with facial fillers to address both dynamic wrinkles and volume loss for comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Eyelid Surgery

Pair with upper eyelid blepharoplasty or lower eyelid surgery for complete eye area enhancement.

Facial Resurfacing

Combine with laser treatments or chemical peels to improve skin texture while addressing muscle-related wrinkles.

Brow Lift Procedures

Enhance results with brow lift surgery for comprehensive upper face rejuvenation.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

In our practice, Botox and the other botulinum proteins are administered by our highly experienced physicians. We charge by the unit of active protein, not by the area of treatment or the non-specific term “syringe.” That means you pay for exactly what you get.

All of the botulinum proteins are currently the same price, and during your consultation, we’ll create a customized treatment plan to fit your budget. For more details, see our pricing page.

Recovery & Results

One of the biggest advantages of Botox and the other botulinum proteins is the minimal downtime. Most patients can resume daily activities immediately after treatment. Mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites may occur but typically resolves within a few hours to a day.

Depending upon the botulinum protein used, results may begin to appear anywhere from 1-5 days with maximum effect by 1-2 weeks. Effects from Botox and the other proteins typically last 3-4 months, but may last up to a year, and regular treatments can help maintain a smoother, more youthful appearance over time.

Candidates for Botox

You may be a good candidate for Botox if you:

  • Have dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements
  • Are in good overall health and not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Seek a minimally invasive solution to rejuvenate your appearance
  • Wish to address medical concerns such as migraines or hyperhidrosis

FAQs About Botox

How long does a Botox treatment take?
Botox treatments are quick, typically taking 10-20 minutes, making them an excellent “lunchtime procedure.”
Is Botox painful?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort, often described as a small pinch. A topical anesthetic can be applied if needed.
Can Botox prevent wrinkles?
Yes, Botox can be used preventatively to reduce the development of wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements.
Will my face look frozen after Botox?
When administered by an experienced provider, Botox results look natural, allowing for normal facial expressions.
How often do I need Botox treatments?
Results typically last 3-4 months. Regular maintenance treatments can help prolong the effects and prevent wrinkles from reappearing.
Does It Matter Whether the Person Injecting Is a Doctor?
Yes and no. More important than a medical or nursing degree are:

  • experience,
  • a clear and detailed knowledge of facial anatomy,
  • understanding the medical conditions that may be adversely affected by the botulinum proteins, and
  • appreciation of the biologic differences among the proteins.

Our physicians have been providing these treatments for over 30 years.

Which botulinum protein is the best?
Although Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, Jeuveau, and Xeomin are all botulinum proteins, they each have different biologic activity and characteristics. In our practice, we will explain the differences and help you choose the best option for you.
What can I do to make the treatment last longer?
In some people, a relative zinc deficiency can decrease the effect of botulinum proteins. Zinc replenishment is easy but must be done correctly before your treatment.
Can we numb or ice the face before injections?
Over two decades ago our practice showed that both pre-injection numbing and/or icing decreases the effect of the treatment.
My friend and I have been getting exactly the same treatment, but he does better than I do.
Each person should receive a unique treatment pattern, customizing the location and number of injections, the dose at each site, the protein used, and the dilution of the preparation in order to maximize results.
