What can I expect during surgery?

Blepharoplasty surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, so you will go home soon after the procedure is complete. Some people need IV anesthesia or a Valium to ease their nerves. We first start with an incision in the upper eyelids along the natural eyelid crease. Placement of the incision in this area is great for hiding the scar and minimizing scarring after surgery. Finally, the incision is carefully closed with stitches.

How long is the recovery?

We will keep you in a monitoring room for some time after the procedure to make sure you don’t have any reactions or other problems. Once you go home, the doctor may suggest taking pain meds or using ice packs.

Mild pain, swelling, and bruising may occur along with blurry vision and sensitivity to light. These symptoms usually last from a few days to a few weeks.  Every day your eyes will look better and better. Patients who wear contact lenses will need to keep from doing so for at least two weeks and use glasses instead.
